Acupuncture

Acupuncture is the oldest, continuously-practiced medical system in the world originating approximately 5000 years ago in China.

The basic idea behind acupuncture, according to ancient theory, is that energy flows within the human body and can be stimulated to create balance and health. The energy flow (or vital force) called qi (pronounced “chee”) moves throughout the body along 12 main channels known as meridians.

Acupuncturists believe a blocking or imbalance of the flow of qi at any point on a pathway results in illness and pain. Acupuncture unblocks and re-balances the flow of qi to restore health.

Acupuncture has become well know in North America for pain relief, but it is also effective for a wide variety of problems. It has been endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO) as being an effective treatment for various conditions such as: arthritis, back pain, carpal tunnel, depression, digestive problems, headaches, menstrual/female disorders, car accidents, neck pain, and more.

Acupuncture needles are about the thickness of a human hair. The sensation you will feel is very unique and can vary from tingling, to heaviness, to warmth, or nothing at all. Each person’s experience is different. Most clients find acupuncture a relaxing experience and will usually fall asleep during a treatment.

Acupuncture is covered by most extended health care benefit plans.

Acupuncture is available in the Markham clinic location.
